Weekly devotion: God’s unshakeable presence amid uncertainty

In a context of ongoing violence, displacement and famine in Gaza, our partner Caritas Jerusalem is continuing to faithfully serve people in need. Due to the intensification of Israeli military operations in northern Gaza in September 2025, and fearing for the safety of their staff, they have been forced to close five of their 10 clinics. However, the medical teams remain active in the south, where displaced families are gathering, and continue to deliver urgent, life-saving healthcare through five temporary clinics.
We are continuing to support Caritas Jerusalem to vulnerable families in Gaza. Despite the sky-rocketing inflation and scarce availability of food, this cash assistance is helping families to pay for some of their basic needs and retain dignity.
Bible reading
‘There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.’
Psalm 46: 4-7
Thought
Even in the midst of chaos, displacement, and fear, God’s presence is unshakeable. Psalm 46 reminds us that while nations roar and kingdoms crumble, God remains our fortress. Caritas Jerusalem’s continued service amid deep suffering is a living stream of hope, echoing the Psalm’s assurance that God is within the city, and she will not fall. Their steadfastness reflects God’s own faithfulness.
Ask yourself: Where might God be calling you to be a stream of hope or a source of steadfast support in a world that feels unstable?
Prayer
Loving God,
We pray for the people in Gaza who have endured two years of violence, displacement and hunger.
We commit to you Caritas Jerusalem and our other local partners in Gaza. Give them boldness, strength and courage as they continue to serve those in need. Please protect them as they give sacrificially to others.
We plead for an immediate ceasefire, for the release of all hostages, and for the safe and swift delivery of aid to all who need it.
We ask all of this in the name of the Prince of Peace, your Son and our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
